Spooky Month Is Here! Why I love mystery in my novels

The spooky month October is here! With the crisp air and longer nights, there’s no better time to dive into the world of mystery novels. I often get asked why I infuse my stories with so much mystery and fantastical elements, and today, I want to share exactly why this genre holds a special place in my heart.
For starters, my novels are set in today’s world, but I love sprinkling them with an extra layer of the unknown. There’s something incredibly exhilarating about taking a seemingly ordinary setting and weaving in elements of mystery and fantasy. Fantastical creatures lurking in shadows, secrets waiting to be uncovered, and protagonists who are thrown into a whirlwind of uncertainty—these are the ingredients that make my stories more gripping than everyday life.
Mystery is not just about solving a puzzle; it’s about the journey, the unexpected twists, and the revelations that come with it. Life itself is filled with unexplained phenomena and questions that leave us pondering, and I try to reflect that in my writing. There’s always that sense of wonder and curiosity, much like in real life, where things happen that are hard to explain.
Another unique aspect of my writing comes from my perspective as a gay male author. My sexuality infuses my characters with diverse backgrounds and experiences, adding depth and authenticity to their stories. I aim to create characters who are complex and relatable, each with their own quirks and secrets. This diversity allows my readers to see the world from different angles and to connect with characters who might not fit the traditional molds. When I was growing up, I felt I didn’t belong. Like an alien or a mystical creature who was dropped in between common people. Common people who judged and bullied and didn’t just let me be. They never left me in peace.
Writing mystery allows me to explore these facets of human nature and society in a way that is both engaging and thought-provoking. It challenges my characters and my readers to look beyond the obvious, to question everything, and to embrace the unexpected. Reading takes us to new worlds and lets us dream. That’s why my books will always end with a positive twist, even if things might seem dark and dangerous.
