OwnVoices – Stories based on people’s experiences
Hey Booklovers!
In my writing journey, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the OwnVoices movement and the incredible impact it’s had on the literary world.
For those unfamiliar with the term, the OwnVoices movement is a literary and social movement that highlights and promotes books and other media where the creator shares the same marginalized identity as the characters or subjects they are writing about. The term “OwnVoices” was coined by author Corinne Duyvis in 2015 as a hashtag to recommend books about diverse characters written by authors from those same diverse backgrounds.
As a gay man, it’s not just a movement, it’s a personal mission to ensure that our stories are told authentically and with the depth they deserve. OwnVoices is a game-changer in the writing world, and as a gay man with a pen, it hits close to home for me. OwnVoices isn’t just a trend—it’s about making sure our stories are told right, by the people who’ve lived them.
Growing up, I often felt the absence of characters who truly reflected my experiences and struggles. It wasn’t until I discovered OwnVoices narratives that I found solace in literature. These stories spoke to me on a profound level because they were written by authors who understood firsthand the challenges and triumphs of being queer.
For me, supporting the OwnVoices movement isn’t just about writing LGBTQ+ characters—it’s about infusing my stories with the raw emotions, complex relationships, and messy realities that I’ve encountered in my own life. Whether I’m penning a coming out tale, a romance novel, or a memoir about my journey to self-acceptance, I draw from the depths of my own experiences to create characters and narratives that feel genuine and relatable.
But it’s not just about my writing; it’s about championing the voices of fellow marginalized authors. I actively seek out and celebrate the work of other LGBTQ+ writers, sharing their stories and amplifying their voices whenever I can. Because I know firsthand the power of seeing yourself represented in literature—it’s validating, empowering, and it fosters a sense of belonging that is truly transformative.
Through my journey with OwnVoices, I’ve learned that representation isn’t just about visibility—it’s about authenticity, empathy, and the power to change hearts and minds. By sharing our stories, we challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and pave the way for a more inclusive literary landscape.
So, as I continue on my writing journey, I remain steadfast in my commitment to the OwnVoices movement. Because our stories deserve to be heard, our voices deserve to be uplifted, and together, we can create a world where every reader feels seen, heard, and understood.
